Work steps for renovation plaster

The application of restoration plaster differs in the work steps hardly from the normal plastering. But the preparation must be thorough.

Restoration plaster has a rough structure. It can therefore bind salts and moisture and helps to dry the masonry. It can not replace a missing horizontal seal or a wall seal.

1. Eliminating the cause of moisture

In the first step, measures are necessary to prevent further penetration of moisture. Here, a professional should be on hand with help and advice.

2. Provide required tools

To remove the old plaster, a masonry hammer and a small chisel are required. To mix the plaster, a construction bucket and a stirrer or a suitable attachment for the drill.

Furthermore, fast cleaning strips, tin snips, pencil, folding rule, spirit level, tassel, trowel, grape trowel, straightener and float must be present. The material costs between 100 and 200 euros.

3. One of the most important steps - Remove old plaster

The existing plaster must be hammered at least 20 centimeters beyond the visible wet area. It is safer to remove the old plaster and paints up to 80 centimeters above the visible moisture and salt damage zone.

The masonry joints must also be scraped to a depth of at least 20 millimeters. Here the chisel serves well.

4. Correctly affix the cleaning strips

After turning the wall, the client must mark the position of the cleaning strips using the spirit level and the ruler. The first profile must be about 30 centimeters from a corner, the profile distance is 1.5 meters.

To attach the strips, thick pieces of touched plaster are thrown against the wall and the strips are pressed firmly into these adhesive points. These steps can easily be done by a layman.

5. Professionally apply restoration plaster

Applying restoration plaster is usually done in three steps. In the first step, very thin plaster is thrown against the wall with the quast, the small lumps serve as a primer.

Now follows the sprinkling with the trowel and normal solid plaster. In the last step a layer with the trowel is applied to the still damp plaster.

Throwing is a matter of practice. Especially in the corners and just below the ceiling, do-it-yourselfers have problems with it. For this reason, a person skilled in the art should take over these work steps if the area is larger.

The material costs about 80 to 90 cents per square meter, for the craftsman 20 euros for interior plaster and 30 euros for exterior plaster are to be expected.

6. Ensure a smooth surface

The rest of the work is simple. Now it is necessary to remove the restoration plaster at the level of the cleaning strips with the straightedge in one go from the bottom to the top. The easiest way to do this is to bring the log up in short left-right motions.

If there are any missing spots, they should be filled up immediately and the withdrawal repeated. Finally, you can structure the plaster with a float.
