Windows: wood, plastic, aluminum - which frame is the best?
Homeowners who install new window frames face the question: plastic, wood or aluminum? Each material has its advantages and disadvantages.
Modern window frames at a glance
One thing is clear: All window frames offered by window manufacturers are of high quality. They meet the demands that homeowners or legislators place on the required thermal insulation and durability.
The companies offer windows made of plastic, aluminum, wood and wood-aluminum. None of the materials is bad. Wooden and aluminum constructions have an influence on the living ambience.
Wood looks warm and cozy, while Alu has a cool and futuristic look. Plastic looks more neutral or cozy like wood, depending on the color of the material.
Plastic windows considered in detail
Plastic window frames are by far the cheapest frames on the market. A window with the dimension 130 to 150 centimeters is available from 200 euros. The frames are easy to clean and weatherproof - with a lifespan of over 25 years is expected.
The frames offer less noise protection than other windows. This is irrelevant in practice, since the noise protection is ensured primarily by the glass. Safety, on the other hand, is an important aspect: these frames can burn and are easily overcome by burglars.
What can wood windows do?
Wood windows cost on average between 30 and 40 percent more than plastic windows. Prices start at € 260 for the above measurements.
Wood is not weather-resistant and requires considerable care. Those who regularly maintain the windows can expect the same durability as with plastic. If the care is neglected, the windows are often unusable after only ten years.
Wood absorbs heat a little better than plastic and offers more resistance to a burglar. In addition, wood is a natural building material. In old buildings or in houses, which are under monument protection, wooden windows are meaningful or regulation because of their optics.

Alu and wood aluminum - the premier class under the windows
Windows with aluminum frames cost on average 40 to 50 percent more than plastic windows. The mentioned window costs in this execution at least 280 euros.
The material is even easier to clean than plastic and offers significantly more security than wood or plastic: aluminum does not burn and is difficult to overcome by burglars. The thermal insulation is similar to the favorable plastic windows, as well as the life expectancy.
Window frames made of wood and aluminum combine all the advantages of the two materials. The outside of the wooden windows is covered with aluminum profiles, which can again be laminated with wood for visual reasons. The windows radiate the comfort of wood inside and out.
They are weather-resistant, easy-care and offer a high degree of safety. The prices are 70 to 100 percent higher than those for plastic windows. A window of size 130 to 150 centimeters costs about 350 euros, with additional wood lamination of the outside area about 700 euros.
Plastic windows are usually sufficient
Modern plastic windows are inexpensive and are quite sufficient, if no special demands are made. Those who value safety should opt for aluminum or wood aluminum. Wooden windows offer a comfortable ambience and are often prescribed as part of the preservation order. The more expensive wood-aluminum windows are recommended in such cases.
