Pay attention to the electrical system during drilling - Notes
When drilling, it is important to know where the electrical system is under the wall. If an electric line is hit, it can have serious consequences.
Where is the electrical system in the wall?
Usually, sockets and switches indicate that the wiring is running. If the power lines are laid correctly, they run according to a predefined plan in defined installation zones. The installation always takes place horizontally or vertically to the ceiling or floor. A craftsman will lay the cables at a distance of about 30 centimeters from the ceiling and floor, if possible.
A good aid in detecting the electric cables is a line locator. A variant of the line finder detects electrical voltages. The second variant reacts to metal, which thus also finds water and gas pipes. It is advisable to maintain a safe distance around the points where the line finder has knocked out.
In a new building, photographing the laid lines is another help. Before plastering, you should be able to see exactly where the cables are located.
The safest variant is an installation plan so that none of the cables laid during drilling can be hit. It is important that subsequent changes in the electrical system can be seen in this plan.
Before each drilling, it is essential to check where the electrical system is located behind the wall. Mainly in old buildings, the cables and lines do not run according to a defined plan. The use of power tools such as the line locator is helpful here.
Even if it is certain how the electrical line is laid, it is recommended to switch off the power. The dangers of electrocution should not be underestimated. There is an acute danger to life when drilling through a line that carries current.
Measures in the event of damage to the cables
If a power cable is damaged, replacement is essential. The defective cable poses a major security risk as it can no longer withstand the full load. In the worst case, this causes a fire in the home.
If damage has been caused to a water pipe during drilling, the first measure is to turn off the main tap. Damaged water pipes should be replaced as well as electric cables. Otherwise, there is a risk of water damage.
Ideally, an electrician will replace the damaged wiring. In the event of a defective water pipe, a sanitary specialist is the right contact person.
