Finding the right dowel
Dowel is the same dowel? Who assumes it is wrong, because the range of different species is large. So they are available as all purpose dowels, expansion dowels, spiral dowels, frame dowels, insulation dowels, porous concrete dowels, spring-loaded dowels, heavy duty dowels, nail dowels, cavity dowels and many more. For the sake of simplicity, retailers have divided the different models into three categories: In standard dowels, cavity dowels and special dowels.
If the DIY enthusiast wants to buy the fixing material, he must first know which building material his walls are made of. Because everybody knows that: The holes are drilled, the dowels are plugged in and the screws are screwed in - yet they wobble. What is right in the walls is what the dust in the walls reveals
Whoever lives in an old building often does not know which building material is behind it Plaster or wallpaper is located. If the dust is dust-fine, from white to light gray in color and still free-flowing, it is concrete. Also white is aerated concrete, but slightly greasy and grainy. In contrast to concrete walls, where a hammer drill is necessary, a normal percussion drill is sufficient. Likewise, lime-sandstones disintegrate into white flour, which feels sandy. Plasterboard has white drill dust, which sticks to the drill bit. On the other hand it trickles out in gypsum fiberboard light gray. With clay bricks or bricks, yellowish or reddish drilling dust appears.

Expansion dowels are the classics in the dowel world. When screwing in the screw, they brace against the wall of the borehole and provide support here. They are best suited for concrete walls or in solid masonry. However, they have problems in stones with hollow chambers or lightweight walls, because they do not get stuck in cavities.
Again, universal dowels are all-rounders in such wall structures. These are also securely fixed in gypsum fiber boards, plasterboard walls as well as in perforated bricks. Thanks to their many forms, they anchor themselves in cavities and spread in the walls. Thus, all purpose dowels are the first choice for all fasteners that do not carry heavy loads.
To keep things in place on Rigips drywall walls, special cavity dowels are used. After pushing through the hole, a folding mechanism opens, holding the plasma TV on the wall, for example. Due to their screw-like thread, plasterboard dowels differ significantly from the conventional dowels, which cut into the material. However, they are not suitable for heavy kitchen cabinets.

Sometimes the soft structure of aerated concrete walls causes problems for do-it-yourselfers. Usually, aerated concrete dowels made of plastic or metal with a spiral external thread and can also be used in gas concrete. They are suitable for mirrors and mailboxes as well as for lamps, with metal versions recommended for ceiling mounting.
When it comes to hanging large loads such as wall cabinets, the handyman works best with heavy-duty dowels. If a machine screw is turned in the metal sleeve, the sleeve spreads in a star shape in the bore. They are available in different designs and lengths as well as for different load capacities.
Some old clay walls are not strong enough to carry sinks. So-called liquid dowels are made of a quick-setting synthetic resin mortar, which literally concretes the screws into the drilled holes by means of a cartridge. This is the most expensive dowel variant, - ten euros per piece - but keep everything reliably in place. In addition, they work regardless of the size of the borehole.
Thus, dowels are not the same as dowels - neither in terms of stability nor purpose. Therefore, it is important to choose from the wide range of suitable. After all, the attached object should remain in place.
