Setting up the garden fence - Guide for a wooden fence

The first storm blows the garden fence. To prevent that from happening, DIY enthusiasts should plan the installation with the help of a guidebook.

The wooden fence as a multifunctional wren

Fences can fulfill different purposes. The most important requirement for the construction is the property boundary. But also privacy and wind protection can count to the requirements. Plastic or wood garden fences meet all three requirements. Although metal fence or chain link fence can also be set up, unlike the plastic or wood variant, such wind protection and visual protection functions are difficult to fulfill.

Guides recommend wooden fences, because even the layman can build them relatively professionally. For this he needs only fence fields, slats, posts and galvanized nails. In addition, L-profiles, post caps, impact sleeves and concrete help with a stable construction.

Weather protection for a wooden garden fence

Stability is the most important requirement for a garden fence. Unlike plastic, wood is sensitive to weather. To extend the service life, guides for fence construction therefore recommend robust types of wood such as spruce or pine. In addition, a glaze or varnish can protect the natural material. Extra moisture protection for the fence panels provides a safety distance of ten centimeters to the ground.

In order to protect the posts from moisture and slippage, they are mounted on a concrete foundation with recessed turn-in sleeves. Concrete foundations, in addition to rotting protection, ensure increased zoustability. Below each post is a hole about 70 centimeters deep into which concrete, gravel and concrete are returned.

Before the concrete hardens, insert the impact sleeves and adjust them precisely. Then the posts can be easily hit on the sleeves. For reasons of stability, the distance between the post elements should not be more than two meters.

Set up the fence according to the guideline - the right dimensions

The decision for a fence form is the beginning of every fence planning. Hunter or picket fences are the most popular variants, with the slatted variant with garden gate being the simplest in implementation. Fence elements such as garden gates can be bought ready and screwed as a fence between two posts. In the other fields, the individual slats sit vertically on two cross struts each.

L-profiles connect the posts with the crossbeams and galvanized nails fix the slats to the cross struts. Before the lath purchase is an exact measure of the fence area. The height of the fence is also considered. On average, a garden fence is about 1.10 meters high. On the other hand, an effective privacy fence starts at about two meters.

As high fences change the architectural image of the area, you need a permit from the building authority to set it up. As soon as the fence dimensions and height are determined, laths can be bought. But be careful: Too tight lathing can affect the Zaunstabilität in areas with strong winds. By the way, wind protection elements can be attached to the inside of the construction and the multifunctional wren is ready. One last tip for cost savings: Plan separating fences together with the neighbors and share the costs.
