In addition to the north-south orientation, the average solar radiation and the shadows cast by trees or neighboring buildings are of great importance.

The functional principle

The heart of a solar thermal system is the collector. He collects the energy of sunlight. It consists of a so-called absorber, which absorbs the incoming sun rays and converts them into heat. So that the energy can be transported, the absorber is filled with a heat transfer fluid. This usually consists of water and environmentally friendly antifreeze. The liquid circulates between the collector and the DHW cylinder, the domestic hot water generator.

The solar system is automatically controlled by a regulator. If the temperature at the collector is higher than the existing temperature in the DHW cylinder, the controller switches on. It starts the cycle and the absorbed energy is transported to the storage tank. Here, the warm water can then be taken and used.

Big savings potential

In view of rising energy prices, a solar thermal system pays off quickly - also due to the low maintenance costs and the low operating costs. In addition, the plants are always cheaper and their efficiency is steadily improving. At present, it can cover at least 30 percent of the heating demand in the house and even 50 to 65 percent of its hot water requirements. Whether the purchase is worthwhile can be calculated by a specialist.
