Renovating Shower Seals - Step by Step
In the past, the shower seal in bathrooms has often been carried out incorrectly. This circumstance must be taken into account when renovating.
1. Note existing shower seal
Tiles with cement joints are not impermeable to water. A so-called composite seal is required. This means that the substrate must be protected against penetrating water. If you are not sure that this happened with the original shower seal, you have to knock off the old tiles from the wall. It may be possible to seal the tiles from the outside.
If the substrate is sealed, it is sufficient to reseal the joints.
2. Selecting the right method
If the substrate is not sealed, it may be advisable to cover the tiles in the spray water area with plates made of tempered glass or acrylic.
Alternatively, a new structure is recommended, ie knocking off the tiles from the wall, new plastering and a paint with a sealant. When this has dried, new tiles with waterproof tile adhesive must be applied.
A completely new construction costs between 50 and 100 euros per square meter. Covering with panels is significantly cheaper at 20 to 30 euros per square meter.
3. Needed Renovation Tools
If old tiles are to be removed, a sledgehammer and a chisel are needed. For plastering a stirrer, a trowel and Abziehbretter are required. This work should be carried out better by a specialist firm.
Otherwise, toothed scrapers are needed to spread the adhesive and a puff to spread the sealant. If sealing is done on large format boards, silicone and a press are sufficient.
When the shower seal is new tiling, the renovation begins with the old tiles being torn off and the wall plastered.
Sealing with mud or paint is the next step. Anyone who wants to cover existing tiles must first clean everything thoroughly and scratch the old sealant from the joints.
5. Thoroughly seal joints
Before the tiles or tiles are applied, the joints must be sealed. In the corners and at the transition between the wall and shower tray is to adhere sealing tape. The fittings should also be embedded in sealing tape.
The work is done first, as the tapes disappear under decorative material in the next step.
6. Dressing the walls
When the floor is sealed in this way, it is time to tile or stick the panels. Once the glue has set, the grouting of the tiles begins.
Carefully washing the mass off the tiles completes this operation when renovating.
7. Final Works
By carefully preparing the wall for tile, everything is already tight. Nevertheless, all connection joints should still be sealed with silicone.
Anyone who has decided to glue large waterproof panels is not quite finished with the shower seal: Open connection joints between the shower tray or the fittings and the panels, as well as the butt joints between the two Elements, allow water to penetrate. With this method, grouting with silicone is absolutely necessary and must be done very carefully.
