Silicon Removal and Renewal Tips

Silicon Removal and Renewal Tips

Bathroom and kitchen joints become unsightly over time. The renewal of the silicone is preceded by the removal of old silicone.

Silicone is a durable and elastic material for joints in bathroom and kitchen. After a few years, the silicone joints become hard and cracked. They let moisture through, which molds the way, because mold loves permanent moisture. A removal of the old joints and a renewal of the silicone is appropriate. An alternative to silicone is spray acrylic, which is less elastic.

Silicone is available in different colors. For bathrooms and kitchens, the color of choice is usually white, creamy white or a light gray. White tiles look clean and sterile with white silicone. A creamy white between the white or off-white tiles loosens the sterility. For gray tiles you can use white or light gray silicone. Marbled tiles receive silicone joints in the darkest color of the tile. The decisive factor in the choice of color, of course, is your own taste.

Removal of old joints with scratches and silicone remover

The first step in removing old silicone joints is achieved with a joint scraper. With the tip of the joints can be cut out. This work requires strength and patience. If you lift the joints correctly, you can pull them out as a whole.

When scraping out the joints, residues remain. These can be solved with a silicone remover. The remover dissolves the residues, which can then be wiped off.

If mold is present, it is treated with mildew remover. To prevent re-mold, the use of mold blockers makes sense. This works 24 hours. A mold blocker prevents re-mold in advance.

Spraying new silicone between the tiles

Vor When spraying the new sealant, the tiles are covered with painters' tape. This step does not apply to craftspeople or people practicing grouting.

The use of branded silicone is advisable because it contains mold protection. To prepare, place a new tip on the silicone cartridge and cut it off. The cartridge comes into the spray gun. After a few bumps - until silicone comes out of the tip - the gun is ready for use.

The sealant is sprayed with the gun evenly and without settling into the joint. You work with light pressure, so that no cavities arise and the joint is completely filled with silicone. Otherwise, waterlogging can accumulate behind the joints. The movement of the gun creates a wave pattern. In a spray bottle, water is ready with a drop of detergent. This is sprayed on the silicone joint. A silicone straightener helps to smooth the joint so that the wave pattern disappears. Dispose of the silicone, which is being removed, with the old joints.

After removing the adhesive tape, the silicone joints must cure for at least twelve hours. The drying time depends on the information on the silicone cartridge. After that, they can come back into contact with water.
