Plastic windows paint with foil - Noteworthy
If you want to give a different color to plastic windows, you can paint or foil them. Foldering is usually the better method
Comparing foiling and brushing
To mention it at the beginning: It is easily possible to paint plastic windows with lacquers. Plastic painting is commonplace in the automotive industry today. After cleaning the window frames, all you need to do is prime with primer so that the paint will adhere to the plastic.
However, the homeowner needs to know what the frames are made of. These are usually made of PVC, while the auto industry is usually painted ABS plastic. For the choice of the products, it is of utmost importance to know the material of the frame exactly.
The foil is unproblematic in this respect, since the films adhere to all smooth surfaces. It is only important to choose a durable material that is suitable for outdoor use. Ideal materials are those that are also used when repainting car bodies.
These films are elastic, can be easily put around corners and edges and glued excellently. In addition, they are characterized by a high UV resistance. They are prone to yellowing, fading or embrittlement. High quality products have a lifespan of eight to ten years and can be replaced again.
The slides say they are easy and safe to attach. You do not need to dry and there is no risk of insects or dust contaminating the freshly painted surface. In addition, the elaborate pretreatment is eliminated and the exact knowledge of which material the frame consists is superfluous.
Foldering has the disadvantage that adhesive residues remain after removal. To repaint or glue the windows, you have to sand down these residues in a labor-intensive process. Scratches or holes in the material can not be repaired as easily as they would be in paint.
Affix film to plastic window
In comparison to painting, filming is simple and requires little effort. At the beginning, the windows should be cleaned with an antistatic plastic cleaner.
It is sufficient to roughly cut the films before sticking them on. They should protrude two centimeters on all sides over the surface to be covered.
Now the frames are to be heated with a hair dryer. The film is removed piece by piece from the backing paper and pressed onto the frame. By rubbing with a squeegee, air bubbles disappear and the adhesive will bind.
There is no need to mask the discs. The exact cut is made with a scalpel directly at the window. By heating and stretching, corners and edges can also be laminated well with the films.
Costs of the process
A strip of high-quality film with a width of 20 centimeters and a length of ten meters costs about 100 euros. With this quantity, the frames can be glued from a window of 1.20 meters to 1.20 meters. In addition, squeegees and knives are required for twenty to thirty euros.
The time required is about the same as when painting. For a window of this size, three to four hours are needed. A skilled handyman masters the foliation relatively quickly after some practice. However, he should expect to be wasting material while practicing.
At present, there are still a few specialist companies offering filming locally. The prices for this work are extremely different. Therefore, no information is available here.
Despite the high costs, it is worth beautifying plastic windows or doors with foils instead of brushes. The result is much more attractive than after painting, since it is almost impossible to protect wet paint from dust and insects. Both leave traces in the paint. These problems do not exist when filming.
