Painting bathroom tiles with tile varnish - step-by-step


Painting old bathroom tiles is a cost-effective variant of tile mirror renovation. This eliminates knocking off or sticking over.

1. Coating bathroom tiles with tile varnish - preparation

Before painting, the tile mirror must be treated with basic cleaner. In addition, screws, dowels and any stickers must be removed. Spray the cleaner evenly thin on the tiles and rub it off with a clean cloth or sponge.

2. Lightly sand tile mirror

From now on protective gloves should be worn for the work steps. The old tile mirror is lightly sanded with fine sandpaper. Afterwards, the sanding dust has to be removed thoroughly before you can apply the primer. This is done with a clean rag and circular motions.

3. Checking whether joints can be painted

The joints must first be checked for paintability. To do this simply dab some paint - if it drips off, the joints are cut out or replaced.

4. Ventilate the bathroom

Before and during the painting of the bathroom tiles, the bathroom must be ventilated carefully to lower the humidity. Only then can the paint dry properly. The humidity should be less than 60 percent.

5. Cleaning work tools

Before using, work tools such as brushes, paint rollers and also the paint tray are cleaned with a dust cloth. Thus, dust inclusions in the paint can be avoided.

6. Apply the varnish

The tile varnish is applied twice with a small foam roller. Between the individual orders keep the manufacturer recommended drying time

7. Roll up the transparent final coat

After a further drying time of 6 hours, the final coat is rolled evenly thin onto the bath tiles. There are different degrees of gloss available from semi-gloss to high-gloss. The paint has to cure for seven days before the bathroom can be used again.

8. Painting floor tiles properly

Since floors are more heavily used than walls, it is important to use a special tile varnish for floor tiles. In addition, a primer is required in advance, which must dry sufficiently for at least twelve hours.
