Mr. Becker, why should I insulate my roof as a homeowner?

What do I have to look out for?

Basically, care must be taken that the entire property is insulated. As warm air always rises, most of the heat is lost through the roof. However, if only the roof is insulated, the warm air simply seeks another way, e.g. through the walls. In order to maximize energy savings, homeowners can not avoid the insulation of their entire property.

If a homeowner decides to insulate his roof, he has a choice between different types of roof insulation and the materials used. There is the possibility to insulate the roof from the inside. In the so-called intermediate spar insulation, insulating mats, e.g. made of mineral wool used in the spaces between the rafters. Otherwise there is also the possibility of roof insulation from the outside. Of course, the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) also contributed to an increase in demand. The EnEV regulates when new buildings and also in the renovation of older houses, which insulation values ​​are mandatory.

Are there any typical errors that homeowners are subject to the topic of roof insulation?

There are some. For example, in the case of thermal insulation, the material currently has to have a thickness of 180 to 200 millimeters. Owners, whose property is already provided with 100 millimeters of insulating layer, often think that it would be sufficient to install an additional 100 millimeters of insulating layer in addition. That is a fallacy. Each insulation material has a so-called thermal conductivity, for which applies: the smaller the number, the greater the insulation effect. Older insulating materials still have a much higher thermal conductivity than newer ones. Thus, if 100 millimeters of new insulating material are applied to 100 millimeters of old insulating material, the same effect can not be achieved as when 200 millimeters of new insulating material are applied. In addition, clients often do not consider that the requirements for professional roof insulation in the context of the Change EnEV constantly. Today, the insulating layer should be between 180 and 200 millimeters thick, but already between 220 and 240 millimeters next year. A look into the future is well worth it.
