Garden Ponds - Plant and Construction
Water has always been a popular element in garden design. A project that can be realized in almost any garden with a manageable effort is a garden pond.
Size & Location
The size and shape of the water surface should harmonize with the respective property. Although it is easier to achieve an ecological balance in a larger garden pond than in a smaller one; however, the installation of larger ponds often requires professional help. On the other hand, almost anyone can create a smaller garden pond without special knowledge.
If the size of the property allows it, the water surface of the garden pond should be at least 12 square meters. At a maximum depth of one meter in a garden pond of this size a relatively stable temperature prevails and the pond usually cleans itself. Supportive is a natural planting, which is why a balance should be made between deep and shallow water zones.
Larger garden ponds have an ideal location if they receive six to eight hours of sunlight on sunny days. For smaller ponds, however, care must be taken that they do not heat up too much. Neighboring trees should provide shade for two to three hours during lunchtime.
In the past, garden ponds were often concreted. Today, a large number of prefabricated plastic ponds are available, which are as weather-resistant as they are frost-resistant and can withstand intense sunlight. If you would like to individually determine the shape and size of your garden pond, you can use robust pond films, which can also be easily processed by untrained persons.
With the help of a flexible measuring tape, it can be precisely measured after digging the pit how much pond liner is needed. Based on the dimensions of the depression, a length of 50 cm is to be added twice in length and width.
If the pond pit is free of roots and stones, it can be lined with rot-proof non-woven fabric to protect the pond liner. Pond foils should be laid on a sunny day, because they are particularly elastic and adapt optimally to the ground. After laying the pond liner, the pond bottom is sprinkled with fine gravel before the different planting zones are created according to the pond dimensions. Slowly, water is now left in stages in the garden pond. If the garden pond is completely filled with water, you should wait a few days. The surface may still settle and the film slips slightly.
After the overhanging edges of the pond liner have been cut off, the pool edge is covered with stones or coarse gravel and the marginal planting is carried out. Low rooted shrubs should not be planted too close to the edge of the garden pond, because their root system could damage the foil.
