Cleaning the cooker hood

Cleaning the cooker hood

Cooker hoods remove greasy kitchen cooking fumes. For proper operation of the appliance, it should be cleaned regularly.

Why Cleaning Is Needed

Today, in any modern kitchen, there is an extractor hood that removes greasy stews and unpleasant odors when cooking. If this - or the filter - not cleaned regularly, this may affect the functionality. So it can happen that the fat gummy. This significantly complicates the cleaning effort. Likewise, the hood can no longer pull or it drips, because the filter no longer absorbs kitchen fumes.

Also germs and mold bacteria that are harmful to health are produced by the constantly accumulating grease vapor. These spread in the kitchen, then in the whole apartment. In addition, unpleasant odors spread, which are particularly noticeable when entering the kitchen.

Cleaning the metal filter

Before cleaning, the hood type is determined. It is important to distinguish between the so-called exhaust and Umluftdunstabzugshauben. A recirculation hood filters all flavor and fat substances through an activated carbon filter and returns them to the kitchen. Exhaust hoods transport all kitchen fumes and odors directly into the open air via a pipe system.

One thing both variants have in common is that they have a grease filter. This must first be removed from the fume hood. If you have a dishwasher, you can insert the metal filter horizontally and select a hot and long rinse. This ensures that all the fat residues dissolve completely.

If there is no dishwasher in the household, wash the filter by hand in warm water with detergent. For heavier soiling, a 5% soda solution helps to soak the filter for one hour. Afterwards, it is easy to wash off fat residues with a brush. However, caused by the soda slight metal discoloration. As an alternative - and to shorten the waiting time - a steam cleaner is recommended.

Cleaning the fume hood from the outside and inside

Anyone who is already cleaning their fume hood anyway can now make the inside of the fume cupboard. For internal cleaning, the same means as for the metal grease filter are suitable. If all grease deposits are removed thoroughly, the risk of fire is reduced.

When cleaning, do not use a hard dishwashing brush because it causes scratches that will rust later on. Likewise, the steam cleaner should not be used to avoid damaging the electronics.

For the external cleaning of stainless steel, it is best to use a commercially available cleaning milk. Grease stains can be easily removed with a degreasing detergent and a damp microfibre cloth. If necessary, a mild degreaser helps, which is washed off after a short exposure time with plenty of water.

Changing the charcoal filter regularly

Regularly removing the carbon filter

While extractor hoods extract the cooking fume, clean them in grease filters and transport them outside, recirculation units also have an activated charcoal filter to prevent limescale deposits. It must be exchanged no later than three months, or even earlier. It depends on the cooking habits. Households who cook with fat daily are advised to change and clean them every four weeks.

Especially the fact that it is the turn of the cooker hood every four weeks makes housewives and men moan. Nevertheless, this effort is worthwhile. Because a heavily greasy hood is much more time-consuming and difficult to get clean. Even if nobody likes to take over this task - the more often the user cleans the hood, the faster and easier it is!
