Better brighter: Creating an optimal lighting concept

Better brighter: Creating an optimal lighting concept

Eyesight diminishes with age. A good lighting concept, on the other hand, controls and provides adapted light for every eye.

The ideal light conditions

At least from the age of 30, the sight can be significantly reduced. Often, poor lighting conditions are to blame because they put too much strain on the eyes.

Firstly, the eyes compensate for the contrast between brightly lit areas and the dark surroundings. On the other hand, seeing in bad light requires a constant effort of the eye muscles. The consequences are fast fatigue and even eye pain. To ensure that the eyesight does not suffer in the long run, a balance between low-contrast and high-contrast lighting is important.

For the backlight, it is advisable to choose a ceiling light, a ceiling washer or a wall-mounted spotlight. Ideally, these lights have a dimmer to adjust the brightness. Indirect lights do not dazzle and are soft and low in contrast. They barely cast shadows and distribute the light evenly throughout the room.

Zonal or accent light brings more brightness where it's needed. Thus, it provides points of view for better viewing above the worktop in the kitchen or while reading in the corner of the sofa. An alternative to simple recessed spotlights are fluorescent tubes.

Targeted work lighting is required in those places that require concentration. Ideal are floor lamps or table lamps to create a targeted and high-contrast light source at the desk. In addition to the room light, a functional light should always be present, which relieves the eyes in the workplace.

Lighting concepts for different rooms

In the kitchen and dining area, a combination of indirect and direct light design would be ideal. While ceiling spotlights reveal everything as general lighting in drawers and cupboards, hidden spots illuminate the working area optimally.

Because of the varied use of all living spaces, these need at least three different luminaires - in the living room even better five. In addition to the opulent chandelier with energy-saving lamps, floor lamps with rotating spotlights perform a functional function.

LED table lamps are recommended for sewing and reading corners as they provide the required light in the desired locations. For an eye-friendly TV picture, the walls around the TV with sconces are to be bathed in a soft light.

Self-employed people who work at home spend most of their working time on their computers. In practice, a mix of basic lighting and a direct desk lamp has proven to be an optimal lighting concept. The best are recessed or halogen luminaires, which have mirror grids to protect against glare and are designed as fluorescent lamps.

Desk light offers models that direct their light beam into any position and facilitate the visual task.

In addition to Art of light plays the lighting color of a light source for a lighting concept a crucial role. The higher the amount of blue in the light source used, the more it resembles natural daylight. On the other hand, light-white bulbs are more advantageous for VDU work as they demonstrably increase performance.

From LEDs to Halogen - the Choice of Light Bulbs

Consumers have long been able to choose between different bulbs. These differ mainly in energy efficiency, in the light color and brightness.

Halogen lamps donate a white clear light and are preferably used as functional light in the work area. Their big advantage is that they do not alienate colors. However, if you touch the phosphor after a few minutes of burning, you quickly realize that the glass bulbs are getting very hot. Therefore, the savings compared to the conventional light bulb only about 25 to 30 percent.

Meanwhile, there are fluorescent tubes in many colors and shapes. They save electricity, hardly heat up and can be used in confined spaces. In general, this type of lamp has a long life, but with frequent switching operations, this can be drastically reduced. The environmental impact of mercury inside the tubes is also alarming.

Energy-saving lamps consume up to 80 percent less electricity than other bulbs. Although all childhood illnesses, such as a long start-up phase, bright light and high mercury content are resolved, but one drawback remains: the distorted color rendering.

For this reason, energy-saving lamps in the workplaces of photographers, web designers and graphic artists are out of place. Instead, they are for example recommended for hallways, bedrooms and nursery.

Compared to other bulbs, LED and OLED lamps promise the greatest power savings. Nevertheless, consumers refrain from buying the bulbs, although they last long and can be partially dimmed. The disadvantage is the price and the colors of the light, because they are currently still cold. After all, the diodes cost 30 to 40 euros apiece.

Eye-friendly light is a matter of proper planning

In the best case, everyone considers lighting design when building a home or later during renovation. Because often the light thing gets into the background. A thorough planning saves the early loss of vision and therefore expensive eyewear.

This works best through a mix of three different light sources: work lighting, accent lighting and backlighting. Creating an ideal lighting atmosphere is not difficult.
