Ascent of the cellar: from the storeroom to the spa dream

It's worth plowing out the cellar and renovating it. As a luxury oasis, it gives the residents an undreamt-of plus in quality of life.

Beautiful natural stone walls. Tiles and underfloor heating. Homely lighting moods with dimmed LEDs. A large bath tub with emotional shower, a whirlpool, a sauna cabin. And maybe a home trainer next to it. What looks like a wellness oasis in the city or in a luxury hotel is becoming reality in more and more private house cellars. Once the lumber stored here. Or the fuel oil tank struck an existence in darkness. Now the in-house pampering bath spreads out - bright and inviting, always open and always at leisure.

Wellness paradise under the living room

The cellar rooms are ideal for a private retreat. They are barely visible from the outside and thus offer the perfect privacy. In addition, the soil brings with it a sound insulation, so that hardly any noise penetrates. And since the electricity, gas and water pipes are usually led through the cellar into the house, the connection options are usually available.

Oasis inspirations

May it be a pool too? Specialized craft specialist companies give tips and suggestions. They show what can be implemented both creatively and technically in the basement. Qualified retailers also have a huge selection of tiles, natural wall coverings and plasters as well as sanitary ware and fittings. First impressions of feel-good baths convey exhibitions or sample areas to the homeowners.

The dream installation

What definitely belongs in the wellness cellar is dry sealing, thermal insulation, backflow and flood protection as well as adequate ventilation. A large window and a fan for air exchange are indispensable. Also important is a solid and moisture resistant floor. Except tiles, for example, the cheaper linoleum can be installed here. What the basement should ideally still receive is direct access from the outside. Because the bulky loungers and ceramic hot tubs, which must install the plumbing installer, there is not a kit in handy modules for DIY enthusiasts.

The sauna for self-build

By itself, however, can build sauna complete kits. The DIY stores offer them from about 1,000 euros upwards. Their mostly wooden wall elements can be easily screwed together on the basement floor. If the cabin is upright and sealed at the top, the electric oven with its protective wooden grid is placed. But first a power connection must be laid. This work may only be carried out by a licensed electrician. For existing lines in the basement, he will ask around 400 euros for the wiring of the sauna. But their purchase and work are expenses that can be compensated by the non-use of public saunas.
